SethBar – The Changeling

SethBar Buntington has been kept prisoner in his attic bedroom for many years now,
in fact, ever since his little sister, Gif, was born. However, since the cedar tree outside his balcony has grown, he’s managed to escape once in a while without being caught. He doesn’t know why he can’t be like the other kids and go to school and hang out with friends, nor does he understand why the sunlight seems to weaken and drain his strength, or why when the light shifts, Gulpy the puppy, and Thomas the cat, have shadows which follow them across the floor, but he has none. Something is happening though; he does notice something different…the voices that call him at night are getting louder and more persistent, and the changes that seem to be happening deep within him are stirring his soul. When his two best friends, the twins Bert and Lili, climb the tall cedar and bring their cousin Reese to meet him on his thirteenth birthday, he seems to make a strange connection with her. This could be a teenage attraction—because he did just turn thirteen and she is quite beautiful—or it could be something more?

Chaos abounds in the thick of the night as Sethbar and his three friends race back from the fireworks to find Sherk and Elvis snapping photos and hollering, “Freak!” While Reese clings to him desperately hiding behind his back. Sethbar stands his ground with his face to the heavens and concentrates like never before. Thunder and lightning rip through the cloudless sky and all goes black before Sethbar and Reese find themselves in the other world.

Oddly, Reese seems to have been here before and she knows that he is a Bunt
and soon to become Lord of the Dust. She knows about his special powers and starts to teach him how to use them. She also seems to know that it is his destiny to cross over into the other world where the Hunter of Shadows holds stolen shadows trapped in the Land of Darkness. Now it is his quest to travel through the dangerous perils of Yicktown,  Pulltown, Shade County and finally into Darkness to release the trapped shadows who call through the darkness in anguish searching for their souls. It seems an impossible journey with the Terbs who appear out of nowhere to confuse him with their vicious tricks, the flat‐faced ground feeders that travel through the air at phenomenal speeds devouring everything in their path, and the Frigities with blood red eyes that breathe fire; impeding him every step of the way. If it weren’t for the help of the many magical creatures from the kindly, benevolent Yerbs to Twinkle, the tiny Fire Fairy, who all seem to know it was his destiny to reach the towering glass‐dome that hold captive the prisoners; then free the mournful shadows and return light to the land, he might have never been able to journey through the wild and menacing Darkness and escape from the Mugglefudners, Blackballs, Icepickets and Golden Lion‐dogs.

Despite his increasing powers, the dangers terrify him and he longs to return to
the attic prison he knows as home, but on Reese’s insistence and the horrifying screams of the lost shadows he hears in his dreams, he keeps being pulled back into the other world whether he likes it or not. He must, however, disappear into the other world without getting caught, and it’s no easy task especially when his annoying little brother, Sherk, and his best friend, Elvis, are always trying to spy on him. There are too many questions and he must find the answers—like how does Reese know that his little sister, Gif, is alive today because she has his shadow?  If he gets his shadow back, what will happen to his sweet little sister? And, why does his father never want to see him, and what happened that day when he peered through the banisters from the corridor at the top of the stairs to see the black swarm of dust come in the front door and envelope his mother in a strange embrace? Why did his mother willingly walk into this shape that materialized into a man?

The changes happening within him and the mournful cries of the lost shadows
pull him to the other world where he fulfills his destiny and discovers the shocking truth.
